Our view on the LGBT

01 Mar 2024

Recently, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of people who are transgender and have a different sexual orientation. Is LBGT a disease or a choice? What does Islam command about LGBT? We have compiled for you Imam Alparslan Kuytul's takes on the LGBT issue according to Islamic Fiqh.

LGBT; In Islamic law, homosexual relationship between men, gay/gay, is referred to by the word liwaat, while homosexuality between women, lesbianism, is referred to by the word sihâq. A person who has both sexual organs is called a hünsâ (hermaphrodite). People's sexual interests and desires can be normally directed towards the opposite sex or abnormally towards their own sex. However, this never appears as an insurmountable, unsolvable problem. On the contrary, with reason, willpower and treatment, these problems can be eliminated.

"O mankind! Indeed We created you from a male and a female..." (Hujurat, 13) clearly states that human beings are created from two sexes. In other words, it does not mention a third sex. In addition, some problems caused by some hormonal disorders can lead the person to a different point. We all have a small amount of hormones of the opposite sex in our bodies. Otherwise, all men would be extremely tough, all women would be extremely fragile and it would not be possible for the sexes to understand and feel each other. However, these minimal tendencies, which are normally present, can reach advanced levels in some people due to genetic and hormonal disruptions. This can lead to individuals who are predisposed to homosexuality from birth. In general, we can say that LGBT is not a form of creation, but a disease caused by hormonal disorders.

LGBT According to Islamic Fiqh

** Islamic law considers different sexual orientations a sin and a crime because they cross the boundaries set by Allah. Because according to the Qur'an, every human being is created with one gender.

** Homosexuality is not only a personal preference, but also a demand for the necessary legal arrangements to be made in line with this preference. On the other hand, the legalization of homosexuality will prevent the continuation of a healthy generation.

** One of the five pillars of Islamic law is the principle of the protection of the progeny. If LGBT is evaluated in terms of the principle of protection of the generation, it is clear that it cannot find legal grounds in terms of Islamic law. The order determined by Allah (swt) is realized through the reproduction of healthy societies through legitimate means. LGBT is an illegitimate way and this is absolutely unacceptable in Islamic jurisprudence.

In summary, Imam Alparslan Kuytul says the following about LGBT;

- Allah (swt) has sent a book and a messenger to humans in order for them to find the right path, and has given them free will. If Allah [Azza wa Jalla] has subjected His servant to a test in terms of health, He has also provided him with the means to overcome it. A person may have a hormone disorder as a disease. But in the end, women have to protect their femininity and men have to protect their masculinity.

- An approach like 'I was created this way' is an approach that nullifies the will. It is not right to think, "Allah created me like this, so this is how He wants me to live." Allah wants you to live as a man if you were born as a man and as a woman if you were born as a woman.

- The servant should not forget that he is being tested. Some people are tested with cancer, some with blindness, some with hormonal issues. So this is your test too. One must fight this test with the intellect and will that Allah has given him. Also, this condition should be seen as a disease. One should not accept it as a form of creation and should not put the responsibility of sexual preference on Allah.

- There are also people who claim to be LGBT but have no health problems. They do not have a hormone disorder; they have a moral disorder. They have taken it upon themselves to go to extremes and make the nafs a god.

- LGBT is one of the consequences of dissatisfaction arising from the desire to look for another way. LGBT has emerged and increased not in times when Islamic Civilization was dominant, but in these times when Western Civilization is dominant.

In short, Imam Alparslan Kuytul has stated that those with hormonal disorders should seek treatment for LGBT within the framework of the Qur'an and the Sunnah, that they should remember that they are being tested and that Allah has provided them with many aids in this test, such as willpower and books, and that if they are women, they should live as women, and if they are men, they should live as men.

Our Lord mentions that man was not left adrift after he was sent to the earth and that he will be subjected to constant tests . First of all, a Muslim should see this situation as a test and just as Allah tests some people with lung diseases and others with heart diseases, He tests a brother in this situation with a disease that we can call hormonal disorder. A person in this situation should first seek medical treatment. Then, if she is a woman by creation, she should live Islam according to women. If he is a man, he should live Islam according to what men are obliged to do. However, if he or she is attracted to or lusts after members of his or her own sex, he or she should be cautious and be more careful.
